THE GUILDS

2002 Guild Leaders You know, it would be so much more convenient if there were only three guilds in Revelwood. But no such luck. There are dozens of guilds including seamstresses, tailors, chefs, limners, poets, authors, painters, carpenters, procrastinators, politicians, musicians, bikers, fencers, IB acolytes, Q devotees, candlestick makers and of course computer technicians. Anyone who can convince us that what they do is art, can be in a guild. And as you can imagine, we’re quite liberal with our definitions.

Fortunately, however, there are only three Guild Mistresses or Masters, or any combination of such at any one time. For brevity's sake, hereinafter they shall be called Guild Leaders. The three 2002 Guild Leaders are (pictured left to right) Mike D'Mage, Tarani, and Alexandra of the Black Sheep.

Three better suited persons you could not find anywhere. Not at this price anyway. There has been a long list of Guild Leaders over the years in Revelwood. (Last Year's were Taizong Meer, Mistress Mimossa, and Tirani.)  Most I can’t remember. I remember that Heathcliff was once a Guild Leader, as also was The Vicar. It’s not like there is a written record of the lineage to refer to. But that seems to be changing now. These three leaders are unlike their many predecessors. These leaders are well organized. They have everything under control. That is what has the rest of us scared to death. So far, they have pulled off a really great Art Show, won re-election, coerced the appropriate persons to build the performance stage, held an artisan’s community college (University is too formal) and they publish an informative publication known as the Revelwood Artisan’s Guild (RAG).

Celtic Cross The role of the Guild Leader is as ambiguous as the White Cups or the Tripod of Power. Let's use a simplistic approach to the position. They get people to do stuff. There. That’s simple. They encourage, coerce, plead, threaten, begin, finish, persuade, dissuade, tirade and all the other ade’s. However, when it works, it can be a thing of beauty. Like the Celtic Cross shown at right. The Guild Leaders didn’t make the cross. However, they created an environment that inspired the artist enough to do the work. That is their contribution. Of course, they also are accomplished artisans on their own. Mary Raudh is a master brewer, Silva is an accomplished seamstress and Tirani, well, she’s married to Q. There’s got to be an art to that. The Guild Leaders are called upon to help organize art projects, provide direction for fledgling artists, maintain the Green Pages (the Revelwood citizen’s directory) and a bunch of other organizational functions.

The Guild Leaders are responsible for the annual Revelwood Art Show and the various tasks associated with it. These tasks include designing and mailing the invitations, designing and preparing the display areas, making calligraphy title cards, establishing the judging categories, designing and preparing the award certificates, getting the uncooperative inebriated audience to vote, collecting and tallying the votes, and serving as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. All this for the right to be abused by the White Cups and the Tripod of Power. Seems like they’re getting off easy doesn’t it?
